Makalu Base Camp & Shipton Pass
(24 Days, Camping/ Hotels)
| From the sub-tropical Arun valley,
over the Shipton pass to the foot of the world’s
fifth highest peak |
A
fabulous trek to one of the most magnificent yet least
discovered parts of the Nepal Himalayas. From the
sub-tropical Arun valley this route takes us through the
intensively cultivated midlands, populated by Rais and
Sherpas. Crossing the Shipton Pass, used by Shipton and
Hillary during their 1952 reconnaissance of Everest, we
leave all habitation behind and enter a mountain
wilderness of immense proportions. The peaks, glaciers
and deep river gorges are dominated by Makalu, at
8463m., the world’s fifth highest mountain. Other giants
in the area include Baruntse, Chamlang, Pyramid Peak and
Peak 6. As a finale, the approach to the base camp of
this beautiful mountain brings rarely-seen views of
Lhotse and Everest, with their ridges snaking down into
Tibet to the north.
