Everest Base Camp
(18 Days, Lodges/Hotels)
| The classic route through the Sherpa heartland
to the foot of the world's highest peak |
Mount
Everest is the highest mountain in the world. Its elevation of 29,035 feet
(8,850 meters) was determined using GPS satellite equipment on May 5, 1999.
It was previously believed to be slightly lower (29,028 feet /8,848 meters),
as determined in 1954 by averaging measurements from various sites around
the mountain.
There is no greater mountain on earth and this lodge-based trek follows in
the footsteps of the great climbing parties attempting to summit the
mountain from the Nepalese side. Trekking through Sherpa country past
cultivated fields and small villages, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi
before the hard work begins as we climb up to Namche Bazaar. Above the tree
line the scenery is stark but spectacular and the incredible monastery at
Thyangboche is a photographer's paradise and a highlight of the trek, set
against the backdrop of Ama Dablam, Everest and other huge, snowcapped
peaks. With time for acclimatization en-route our goal is Everest Base Camp
on the Khumbu glacier and the opportunity to climb Kala Pattar (5545m) for a
breathtaking view of Everest and one of the greatest mountain views on
earth.
